Moses and the Burning Bush

RESTORING FIRE

Like Moses, God wants us to encounter Him too. It is God’s will for us to know our purpose, He is able to renew our passion, consuming us with a fire to act.

Exodus 3:1-6
Now Moses is tending the flock of Jethro, his father in law, priest of Midian and he led the flock to the far side of the desert, and came to Horeb. The mountain of GOD. [2]  There the Angel of the LORD appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. [3] So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight why the bush does not burn up.”

[4] When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.”

[5] “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” [6] Then he said “I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” At this Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at GOD.

Moses fled Egypt and was separated from his people for forty years because he killed an Egyptian. For the next forty years, he settled in Midian and was content living the life of a shepherd. He was 80 years old when he had an encounter with God at Mt Horeb. When Moses realized that it was the voice of God calling him through the burning bush, he hid his face for he was afraid and ashamed. Despite all that has happened, God has not forgotten Moses. He personally came down (v.8) and commissioned Moses to go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt. Moses humbled himself before the Lord and God renewed His covenant with him at Mt Sinai (Exodus 19-24).

We were once a prodigal running away from God. We have sinned, rebelled against God and lived a life on our own terms. Like Moses, we fill our days with mundane things disregarding the calling God has for our lives. Yet, the truth is that God has not forgotten us. The book of James 4:8-10 invites us to come near to God so He may reveal more of Himself. We are asked to wash our hands and purify our hearts from sin and double-mindedness. We are called to humble ourselves before the Lord, for in due time He will lift us up and renew our minds and hearts to the calling God desired us to accomplish.

How are you living your life right now? Are you content filling your days with mundane things? Running away from God through drug addiction, alcoholism, promiscuity or pursuing wrong relationships? Like Moses, God wants us to encounter Him too. It is God’s will for us to know our purpose, He is able to renew our passion, consuming us with a fire to act. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, we ask that You come and consume us once again. We want to put our works at Your altar and ask that You burn what is not Lord as I pause and listen to You, may You show me things that You wanted me to see and do. Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me. Do not banish me from Your presence, and don’t take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey You (Psalm 51:10-12). In Jesus Name. Amen.
